If you don't want the extensions or "shortcut arrow" to show, there is an option on the explorer tab of TweakUI to change this. That actually goes about whether or I'd like simply the name of the program (without ".exe" also) under the desktop icon. If it is a shortcut to an .exe file, then you can rename it.

After the install my shortcut arrows are corrupted in the manner described. Tried playing with TweakUI. Tried deleting ShellIconCache. None of these worked. I can make any icon the shortcut arrow, so I know the .DLL is OK. GOT IT! I had previously changed my WindowMetrics to increase the size of my desktop icons.
